Eutectic plates on the inside wall and ceiling of a refrigerated body

What is eutectic refrigeration?

Lining the inside walls of the storage compartment on each Cold Car refrigerated body, you’ll find eutectic plates. These plates are large, flat panels filled with a brine solution. When frozen, they become like big ice blocks that release the cold slowly as they thaw.

Instead of using an engine-driven compressor to blow cold air during the delivery route, Cold Car bodies rely on these frozen plates to release cold passively all day, maintaining a consistent temperature without any moving parts or ongoing power draw.

This is the process:

  • Load the truck in the evening.
  • Plug the truck into an electrical outlet overnight. The charge stops once the plates are completely frozen.
  • In the morning, the vehicle is unplugged and ready for deliveries.
  • The plates gradually release their stored cold, never rising above -20°C, even on days over 40°C. The cargo area stays at a consistent temperature all day with no need for the truck to stay running.

How Cold Car’s eutectic systems outperform traditional refrigerated transport

Other forms of refrigerated transport rely on cold air being pumped into the truck body by a compressor, which is usually mounted on top of the vehicle and powered by the engine.

Here’s how eutectic systems offer a better solution:

  • Door openings don’t cause temperature spikes
Traditional systems lose cold air every time a door opens. Eutectic plates, by contrast, not only hold the cold but quickly restore internal temperature after every delivery, preventing products from thermal shock (especially important for delicate products like gelato and frozen desserts).
  • Product temperature stays consistent
Instead of a constant cycle of cooling and reheating, eutectic bodies hold a steady internal temperature all day. Ice cream stays frozen, without the melted edges or dreaded ice crystals.
  • No engine power required during delivery
Once the plates are frozen overnight, you don’t need to keep the engine running to keep the body cold. No idling, no fumes, no noisy compressor, and less fuel consumption.
  • The cold keeps working, even if the truck doesn’t
Normally, if a refrigerated truck breaks down, so does the cooling. With eutectic refrigeration, the cold is stored in the plates, so your product stays frozen.

Delvic Foods chooses Cold Car for refrigerated transport

Delvic Foods – the Melbourne-based food distributor responsible for delivering frozen and chilled products from brands like Streets Ice Cream, Ben and Jerry’s and Everest – knows how important consistency is in refrigerated transport.

Their deliveries often involve long days, multiple stops, and products that simply can’t tolerate fluctuations in temperature.

‘Based on experience,’ says Todd Barnes, Managing Director at Delvic Foods, ‘we are totally sold on the many benefits of eutectic refrigeration over traditional systems.

With a large fleet, we have a variety of systems, but experience has the Cold Car eutectic bodies as our first choice.’

This kind of feedback reinforces what many in the industry are discovering: Cold Car is by far the best investment for the transport of frozen and refrigerated goods.
